What aquatic invaders are among us? Find out at the SEAS Open House

What are aquatic invasive species? How did they get here, are they spreading, and should we be worried?
At the Freshwater Ecology and Conservation Lab booth during the SEAS Open House on 21 May, you will learn about invasive species in our Washington waterways and what you can do to limit their introduction and further spread. If you are brave enough, you can even touch a live invasive red swamp crayfish (pictured above)!

Speakers announced for the 2022 Alaska Salmon Program Annual Science Symposium

Taking place on Friday 9 December at 2pm, the agenda for the 2022 Alaska Salmon Program Annual Science Symposium has been announced. The event will be held in FSH 102, in the Fishery Sciences Building.

This symposium showcases the research of the UW School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences’ Alaska Salmon Program undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff and visiting scientists.

NOAA Hollings Scholarship info session

We are hosting an information session for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship on Wednesday, November 30th at 4:30pm in FSH 207. Freshmen and Sophomores are encouraged to attend. Sophomores already intending to apply for the Hollings this round may benefit from this information session, though we will have a short series of more targeted workshops to help these students with applications starting December 7th.

2022 Eastern Bering Sea Pollock Stock Assessment

The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and the College of the Environment hosted the annual live preview of the most recent assessment of Eastern Bering Sea (EBS) pollock—the target of one of the world’s largest fisheries.
Providing fishery stakeholders and the public the opportunity to learn about the status of the EBS pollock stock and discuss the science underlying the assessment, you can watch the recording of the event below.

Showcase your research at the next SAFS Graduate Student Symposium

The 33rd Annual Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) will be held on Friday, November 18th, 2022, from 9am to 5pm in FSH 107, with a poster session and reception beginning at 5pm in the FSH lobby. This event is a wonderful opportunity for SAFS graduate students to share their current, past, or proposed research and get feedback from other students, faculty, and scientists.

Return of Autumn Seminar Series and SAFS Fall Kickoff

Starting back up on Thursday 29 September at 4pm, join us in-person for the first of the 2022 Autumn Seminar Series, where we take a deep dive with experts into topics of interest in aquatic and fishery sciences.
The first seminar will be delivered by Professor Thomas Quinn on ‘Changing themes in salmon conservation: A 45-year personal perspective’.

With speakers joining us from academia and governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations, the weekly seminars will be followed by a catered reception from 5-6pm.
