Funding
Funding for incoming graduate students
Adequate funding can be an important determinant of a student’s success in graduate school; therefore, SAFS requires funding packages for all incoming graduate students. Funding packages typically include multiple quarters of support with each quarter providing a monthly stipend/salary for living expenses, health insurance, and payment of tuition and some student fees. Students in SAFS may be funded in a variety of ways including:
- research assistantships (RA)
- teaching assistantships (TA)
- fellowships (also known as stipend-with-benefits)
- employer support
- other forms of internal/external aid (scholarships, governmental sponsorship, scholarships from their home countries for international students, etc.)
*noting that external aid is typically used before internal SAFS funding
Applicants are not required to have secured funding prior to submitting the application for admission. All applicants are automatically considered for SAFS-based funding – there is no secondary process required. Funding is determined prior to an admission offer being made and is dependent on faculty sponsorship – each funding package is unique and is based on availability of funding from faculty grants, SAFS fellowships, and external funding (ex. fellowships or employer support).
While applicants aren’t required to apply for internal SAFS funding prior to admission, they can (and are encouraged to) apply for external funding such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (among others). External funding may increase the chance of securing faculty sponsorship for admission to SAFS by helping to increase confirmed funding. It can also provide flexibility in research if funding is not tied to a faculty advisor’s research grant(s). See “Additional Resources for Graduate Funding” below.
Student loans, personal funds/savings, or other forms of “self-funding” are not factored into funding considerations for admissions purposes in the SAFS graduate program. Students may elect to use personal funds and student loans to supplement their expenses, but SAFS will only admit students with confirmed funding for at least six to eight quarters from the sources described above (ex. research or teaching assistantships, fellowships, employer support, etc.)
SAFS Graduate Assistantships
The majority of SAFS graduate students are funded by half-time (50%) research assistantships (RA) supervised by the student’s SAFS faculty adviser and paid from faculty research grants. Students may also be funded as half-time (50%) teaching assistants (TA) for assisting in an academic course – these appointments are supervised by the course instructor and paid on a SAFS budget.
Most graduate student appointments (Research and Teaching Assistantships) in SAFS are governed by an agreement between the UW and the UW/UAW Contract for Academic Student Employees.
TA/RA departmental information, forms, and policies may be found at: Graduate Student Appointments.

SAFS Graduate Fellowships
During each annual admissions cycle, a limited number of SAFS fellowships (aka stipend-with-benefits) for outstanding entering students are available. All applicants who meet the November 15 deadline are automatically evaluated for SAFS fellowships by the Recruitment, Admissions, and Scholarship Committee (RASC), but only top applicants in the overall pool are eligible (usually around the 90th percentile). Eligible applicants may receive an offer of up to eight quarters of fellowship support – these quarters include a monthly stipend (equivalent to the RA rate, health insurance, and payment of tuition and some student fees.

Salary, Stipend, Benefits
The standard RA, TA, and most SAFS Fellowships include:
- Stipend/salary equivalent to 50% full-time (FTE), paid bi-monthly (for duration of appointment) at ASE salary rates
- Waiver/payment of the Operating Fee (both resident and non-resident portions)
- Waiver/payment of the Building Fee, Tech Fee, and U-Pass Fee
- Students are responsible for paying any remaining fees
- Health insurance through the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP)
To be eligible to be funded in a graduate RA/TA/SA ASE position (at any FTE percentage) or on a fellowship with tuition/fee benefits students must:
- Be making satisfactory academic progress
- Maintain satisfactory work performance (ASE appointments)
- Enroll in a minimum of ten credits in autumn, winter, and spring quarters and in exactly two credits during summer quarter (students who wish to enroll in more than 2 credits in Summer quarter must have faculty and academic adviser approval).
The UW Financial Aid Office publishes a cost of attendance estimate for the nine-month academic year. Please keep in mind that out-of-state (i.e., non-resident) tuition is waived each quarter a student holds an eligible research, teaching assistantship, or fellowship.

Funding for continuing SAFS students
SAFS has some funding available for continuing SAFS grads, including travel grants*, research grants, research-based fellowship quarters, and finishing quarter fellowships. Applications for these funding opportunities* are accepted on a quarterly basis (unless otherwise noted) and will be reviewed by the SAFS Recruitment, Admissions and Scholarships Committee (RASC).
*Travel grants are managed by other committees, as noted in the resource list below.
SAFS Finishing Quarter Fellowships
Finishing quarter fellowships may be awarded in one of two ways, based on the applicant’s need:
- a full quarter fellowship, including stipend, health insurance, and payment of tuition and some student fees
- tuition-payment only (does not include stipend or insurance)
Eligibility for the finishing quarter fellowship:
- Must be making satisfactory academic progress
- Must be current on all milestones
- Must be no more than two quarters away from graduation at time of application
- May not receive more than one quarter of finishing quarter support
Awards are based on academic scholarship, satisfactory progress, career achievement, and available resources. All applications will be considered but in times of limited funding, preference will be given to students who did not receive any SAFS fellowship quarters as part of their admissions package.
APPLICATION: SAFS Continuing Student Fellowship Application
QUARTERLY DEADLINES:
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
Support for AUTUMN QUARTER – June 15
Support for WINTER QUARTER – September 15
