SAFS Graduate Student Recognized for Mentoring

Connor Whalen received the College of the Environment’s Exceptional Mentoring of Undergraduates award. This award, given annually to faculty, students and staff throughout the college, recognizes individuals for their efforts to develop undergraduate student research and the intellectual vibrancy of the College of the Environment.

Connor is a parasitologist, currently pursuing a M.S. in SAFS.

Connor’s nomination was noteworthy in that it was led by a large group of undergraduate students who have had the opportunity to work with him.   Students praised Connor’s approachable and encouraging mentorship, his ability to make complex research collaborative and exciting, and the many ways he champions their futures, from writing letters of recommendation to connecting them with faculty, professionals and publication opportunities.

One student captured this sentiment best: “I don’t think I would be where I am today in my career if it wasn’t for Connor’s mentorship.”

Connor was recognized for his achievements during the College of the Environment Spring Celebration, held in May 2026.

Thank you to the team of students who nominated Connor for this award: Hannah Tucker, Anne Rose, Claire Curran, Noah Ozguner, Clara Kreutziger, Charli Henline, Jasper Nevis, Jolee Thirtyacre, Daniel Morillo, Sara Jacks, Mollie Kroll, Erika Miller, and Maddy Glasser

Congratulations Connor!
