Research Intern Opportunity at Columbia Basin Research
The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) at the University of Washington is dedicated to sustaining healthy freshwater and marine environments. Within SAFS is Columbia Basin Research (CBR), a research center that provides public data access and quantitative approaches to issues involving Salmon and Steelhead migrating through regulated river systems.
CBR consists of a group of a dozen employees dedicated to providing important data services and research to the region. We value our employees and promote their professional growth through education and experience.
About the position
- Hourly wage: $23.78/hour
- Hours per week: 40 hours
- Start Date: 13 July 2026 or until filled
- End date: 30 September 2026

The intern will complete a research project focused on the abundance and survival of juvenile salmonids in the Columbia River Basin. Data products produced during this project will contribute to ongoing work to improve understanding and support/inform management of threatened populations.
Primary responsibilities:
- Discover and acquire fish and environmental datasets relevant to ecological research.
- Assist in QCing data and aggregating large, complex fish datasets.
- Assist in running analytical models of salmon responses.
- Document versions of datasets, metadata, QC procedures, analytical models, and research in progress.
- Collaborate with Principal Investigator, Researchers, Database Manager, and Web Computing Specialist.
- Participate in discussions in small group and lab meetings.
Required skills:
- Working knowledge and experience with R or other relevant analytical software.
- Working knowledge and experience with SQL or other database management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly may substitute for working knowledge and experience.
Desired skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic background in statistics, equivalent to introductory-level statistics coursework.
- Experience with Git/GitHub or other version control systems.
