SAFS partners with other UW departments and external organizations such as NOAA, to provide internship opportunities so that students can get hands-on experience with real-world research projects. These internship programs are valuable for students to develop relevant skills for their future academic journey and careers.

Internship Programs

Varanasi Quantitative Undergraduate Summer Internship Program

Spend a summer working on a research project at NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) that integrates mathematics with the science that informs fishery managers. With support from the Usha and S. Rao Varanasi SAFS Faculty Endowment for Student Support fund, the summer internship program is for students majoring in quantitative and computer sciences.

NOAA Marine Mammal Laboratory

The Marine Mammal Laboratory, a division of the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center, conducts research on whales, seals, sea lions and porpoises off the coasts of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California. Each year, students from UW spend a month in the field collecting data on marine mammal behavior, population dynamics, life history, migration patterns, distribution, and trends in abundance.
