Internship: 2017 Student Opportunities Program

Schmidt Ocean Institute is currently accepting applications for the 2017 Student Opportunities program. The Student Opportunities program is a unique chance for students to obtain valuable hands-on research skills and at-sea experience. You can view previous students experiences here. Students will join the Schmidt Ocean Institute crew and scientists aboard R/V Falkor, and assist with unique cutting-edge marine science research. For a list of the 2017 cruises visit here. In addition to working with scientists and participating in data collection, students will be asked to conduct related community outreach and science communications.

Interested students must be enrolled full time in an accredited institution seeking a baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree, or be serving in a post-graduate position, and possess knowledge in at least one of the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, geology, oceanography, or marine technology (e.g. engineering, software, etc.). Recent graduates within 12 months will be considered and all applicants must be at least 18 years old. Time will be given to students to keep up with their studies while they are on board. Students must also have a valid passport and complete medical insurance (including at-sea coverage).

Applications are now available online. A maximum of one berth may be made available per expedition, which is conditional upon science berthing space. Students of all nationalities are encouraged to apply, but accepted individuals are responsible for obtaining their own visas. To apply, students must complete the online application, and submit two signed letters of recommendation, a two pg. CV/resume, and a copy of undergraduate/graduate transcripts by Friday, February 24th, 2017.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time. Please pass on to those you think may be interested.
