Below are announcements for a couple fairly local BioBlitzes – Bainbridge on May 30 and Vashon/Maury on June 5&6. If you can identify organisms (anything living, from microbes to megamammals) these events can be really fun and an interesting way to take a close look at a particular locality over a short period of time and to share your expertise with organizations and communities interested in learning more about the resources for outreach and for management.
Are you an expert in your field of biology?
Consider yourself a naturalist? Enjoy being
outside and sharing your passion
for science with others?
The Land Trust needs you for its first ever BioBlitz!
Scheduled for Saturday, May 30th, 2015, the BioBlitz is a rapid assessment of all living species on designated Land Trust properties within a 12-hour timeframe, 5am to 5pm. It truly is a race against the clock to document as many unique species as possible!
The BioBlitz has two main goals: 1) To collect valuable species information to better inform the Land Trust on its land management strategies and 2) to engage and educate the community about what is living on Bainbridge Island.
To accomplish our goals, we’re looking for dedicated and enthusiastic experts to be Taxa Team Leaders, leading groups of 4-5 volunteer participants in identifying species. Taxa Team Leaders will be asked to not only identify as many species as possible in a 12-hour time period, but to also enthusiastically share their passion for science with other participants!
Team Leaders will have the flexibility to choose their schedules and designate their time spent in the field during the 12-hour window.
We are in need of experts in the following areas:
– Aquatic/Terrestrial Plants & Trees
– Mosses & Lichens
– Aquatic/Terrestrial Mammals
– Aquatic/Terrestrial Invertebrates
– Amphibians & Reptiles
Have another area of expertise you’d like to share? Tell us!
If you’d like more information on becoming a Taxa Team Leader, or if you’d like to sign up, e-mail or call becca or (206) 842-1216, or Sign Up Online Here! There will be more ways to get involved with the BioBlitz in the near future. Stay tuned for participant and other volunteer sign ups.
Hello everyone! Spring is springing and springing and springing. And it’s time to start looking forward to our 4th Annual Bioblitz on Vashon. Although this time it won’t be on Vashon. It will be on…. MAURY!
Please save the date for this event as we’d love you all to join us again:
Friday June 5th at 12 pm through Saturday June 6th at 12 pm.
We will get you more information about exact location of base camps and surveys as the time approaches. We will likely be covering a good portion of the following on an overland route from inner harbor to outer coast through the madrone forests of Maury: Dockton Park, Dockton Forest, Maury Natural Area, and Maury Marine Park.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again and sharing some nature observation time.
Happy spring, Bianca
Vashon Nature Center hours: M,T,Th 9-3
