Fully funded fall internships in Bermuda – NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates – APPLICATION DEADLINE MAY 30TH!

This email serves to announce that the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) has received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program to support eight internships for undergraduate student research at BIOS during fall 2013.
This program provides recipients with the opportunity to conduct intensive, hands-on research projects in several active and ongoing research areas, including:

Biology, chemistry, and physics of the open ocean
Biology, physiology, and biochemistry of coral reef ecosystems
Molecular biology of marine organisms
Environmental chemistry of Bermuda’s atmosphere and inshore waters
Effects and consequences of global environmental change

My Husky Story to award cash for best UW student-created video

Every UW student has a story — about how he got here, what she’s discovered, how they’ve learned to stand out, or fit in. The UW students who tell their stories the best can win $1,500, $1,000 or $500.
The My Husky Story video contest is seeking student-created videos that show how UW students spend their time outside of class. A panel of judges will award $1,500 to the first place winner and $1,000 to the runner-up.

This is the last call for 2013 Nikon Small World competition entries and the companion video competition "Small World in Motion". The deadline is next Tuesday, April 30th. Up to 3 entries for each of these contests can be submitted.

PERS 2013 Annual Meeting – Call for abstracts

This is a great local conference being held just over the boarder in Tsawwassen, BC this year. Additionally, for students they offer free registration in exchange for volunteer hours (jeannie.gilbert) and travel grants (applications due April 1st). Both graduate students and undergraduates researching PNW estuaries and coats are encouraged to apply. More details below:

This non-credit short course includes all the components required to achieve current scientific diving status with the American Academy of Underwater Scientists, www.aaus.org, and the University of Washington, www.uw.edu.
Included will be First Aid/CPR and Oxygen for SCUBA emergencies certifications and a full SCUBA rescue course resulting in PADI certification.
