2014 Undergraduate Research Symposium – Application now open!

The application for the 17th Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium is now open! The Sym­po­sium will be held on May 16, 2014 in Mary Gates Hall. Last year, more than 1,000 under­grad­u­ates par­tic­i­pated.
To learn more and start an appli­ca­tion, visit the Under­grad­u­ate Research Sym­po­sium sec­tion of the URP web­site. All UW under­grad­u­ates involved in research are encour­aged to apply. The appli­ca­tion dead­line is Feb­ru­ary 24, 2014.

The Tatoosh School is a nonprofit, university-level field school with classrooms in the towns, oceans, and forests of Alaska’s Inside Passage. It is the school’s mission to foster first-hand learning about the ecology and environmental policy of southern Southeast Alaska.
Rigorous academics focus on the development of a sense of place and passion for civic engagement, and a sound knowledge of the Pacific coastal rainforest.

> The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), a citizen science program based at the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, is looking for 2-5 undergraduate students to assist with program’s upcoming marine debris data collection project beginning spring 2015.
> Students working with COASST gain valuable, hands-on experience with citizen science programs, scientific protocol development and testing and learn the complexities of adapting data collection to a broad and diverse corps of participants.

The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) invites applications from citizens of its member countries (Canada, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation and USA) for the NPAFC Internship Program. One intern will be accepted upon approval of the Commission.

2014 Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability program
with the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies
Program dates: June 16 – August 8, 2014 (8 weeks).
Application deadline: February 17, 2014.
This NSF-funded program will support highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to conduct independent but guided research that focuses on Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island, CA.

University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL) on San Juan Island in Washington State is now accepting applications for courses and research apprenticeships in 2014.

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications. Mary Gates scholarships provide $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research activities. These scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduates regardless of class year, major or residency status. 

aquaculture position/internship

I work for a seafood transportation firm, Aqualife, here in the PNW area.
We are in the business of transporting live seafood product in ocean-going containers using a patented technology.
We have successfully transported crustaceans (lobster, opilio, etc.), shellfish (clam, oyster, etc.) and fin fish (Sturgeon).
However, our company lacks the proper marine bio background to understand each specific species, their characteristic advantages and disadvantages, and to how to properly conduct trials. 

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes 2014 applications now open!

· be a US citizen (resident anywhere except the UK) and possess a US passport;
· be at least 18 years old;
· have a high level of academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 3.5 (confirmed by academic marks, awards and references);
