FREE MCAT Seminar March 28th, 2013

Jane McGonigal – Video Games Solving Real World Problems

Join Us!On behalf of the School of Social Work, we are excited to announce New York Times best-selling author and video-game designer Jane McGonigal will discuss her work on how virtual games can help people solve real-world problems through engagement, collaboration and collective action. A viewing of Jane’s TED talk will kick off the event followed by a Q&A session.
This event is free and open to all UW Students.

If so, please join us in starting up UW’s first ever Humble Feast dinner! Professor Ann Anagnost, Devra Gartenstein from the U-District Farmer’s Market Patty Pan Grill, and members of the UW Sustainable Food Cooperative (http://uwsfc.com/) are looking for a group of individuals to plan a seasonable menu, source food from local farms, cook together, and enjoy their meal with 100 other guests!

This is John Franco, President of Phi Eta Sigma at UW. I hope your quarter is going well, finals are almost here! I wanted to contact you today to give you more information about who we are and what we do here at Phi Eta Sigma. Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines. 

CHID Is Livestreaming TEDActive 2013!!!!

As part of our collaboration with the TedActive folks (or as we call it here in CHID HQ, CHIDActive), we have been given a free livestream of the TEDActive 2013 conference happening in California this week. We will be doing this in the lounge (PDL C101) all week long, so please stop by for some snacks and smart stuff. The livestream will begin each morning at 8:30am and end on Tues, Wed, and Thursday at 7pm. 

Krip Hop, Police Brutality Profiling & Disability Justice oriented event coming up!

The ASUW Student Disability Commission, the D Center at the University of Washington and the Q Center at the University of the Washington presents “Broken Bodies, Brainwash Ph.Ds. PBP: Police Brutality Profiling”.
March 8th from 5:00 to 6:30 at the Ethnic Cultural Center (Room TBD – The Black Room)
The event is FREE and open to the community. No identification of any kind is needed to attend. 

NASA – Orion Project (all majors welcome)

All students/faculty are invited to a presentation on the NASA Orion Project. Orion, a Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, is a planned beyond-low-earth-orbit manned spacecraft that is being built by Lockheed Martin for NASA for crewed missions to the Moon, asteroids and Mars. It is planned to be launched by the Space Launch System.
NASA will plan on having two UW alum (Howard Hu, Deputy of the Orion Vehicle Integration Office and Nujoud Merancy, Orion Systems Engineer) on hand to give a presentation and answer questions with students and professors from across the university. 

Student Tax classes

Tax time is once again upon us! The University of Washington sends out the 1098T form to all U.S. resident students, indicating whether they have either a potential tax credit or tax liability from the payment of tuition and/or scholarships and grants received. Please help us get the word out about these classes by sending the following announcement to your student lists, as appropriate. 

AFSUW Trivia Night!

Hello SAFS-
Join AFSUW for our annual Trivia Night next Thursday February 21st! Compete with your colleagues for prizes and the coveted trivia trophy.
Festivities will begin at 6:45 in the SAFS lobby following the Bevan seminar. There will be free pizza, salad, pasta and beverages.

ASUW WAC presents the first ever production of The ___________ Monologues!

The ASUW Women’s Action Commission presents the FIRST EVER production of
The ___________ Monologues
previously known as The Vagina Monologues

The ___________ Monologues is an entirely student written and organized production featuring thirteen UW students. Cast members will share personal stories of survival, identity and resistance through a range of performances. As a challenge to the widely-known Vagina Monologues, The ___________ Monologues asserts that people can tell their own stories in their own voices.
