A new study led by the University of Washington finds dramatic increases in the abundance of a worm that can be transmitted to humans who eat raw or undercooked seafood. Its 283-fold increase in abundance since the 1970s could have implications for the health of humans and marine mammals, which both can inadvertently eat the worm.Read more
Polar bears are spending more time on land than they did in the 1990s due to reduced sea ice, new research led by UW associate professor Kristin Laidre shows. Bears in Baffin Bay are getting thinner and adult females are having fewer cubs than when sea ice was more available.Read more
The University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences recently hosted the SeaDoc Society and its Explore the Salish Sea Educator Workshop with the goal of working with King County-area teachers to meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by incorporating local Salish Sea issues and topics into their classrooms.Read more
